Vitex Benefits
Published by admin on Tagged Herbal Supplements
Vitex, also known as Vitex agnus castus, chaste tree, or monk’s pepper, is a plant that can be found in Asia as well in some Mediterranean countries. The part of the plant that is used medicinally is the dried fruit grown on it’s branches.
Traditionally, Vitex was used as a folk remedy for a variety of certain female conditions involving post-partum hemorrhaging, as well as to help for the general period of “afterbirth.” An alternate name for the supplement, “chaste tree”, is derived from the belief that it can repress libido.
The full range of potential health benefits includes:
- PMS, particularly tenderness in the breasts, headaches, and cramping
- Menstrual related acne
- Fibrocystic breast disease
- Menstruation that heavier than normal
- Menopausal symptoms
- Perhaps even female infertility
Even with these type of potential health benefits, it does not actually contain any hormones. It is possible that it can provide these benefits by increasing progesterone. It does this by stimulating the release of luteinizing hormone from the pituitary gland.
In addition, it is also believed that Vitex can also help level excessive prolactin levels.
