Everyone who reads our blog wants to be healthy. Some may want to lose weight — others, gain some by adding muscles. Other visitors may just want to find better ways live a healthier lifestyle in general. Regardless of the reason why you want to be healthier, you’ll undoubtedly encounter some form of exercise in the near future — and it’s easy to get injured unless you’re careful.
One of the easiest injuries to encounter, especially when you first start out on your road to a healthier lifestyle, is tendonitis — Achilles tendonitis, to be specific. Naturally, the best defense against Achilles tendinitis is to warm up with jumping jacks, stretches, or a message before beginning to exercise. You never want to exercise in high-heeled, or loose-fitting shoes. And if you ever feel like you have a sharp pain in your heal, you always want to stop immediately.
Unfortunately, Achilles tendonitis isn’t always able to be prevented — even with proper warmups, appereal, or joint health supplements. Those that are on their feet all day or those that exercise very frequently are prone to it more than those that do not. If you you do ever encounter achilles tendonitis, always remember RICE:
R: Rest your tendon — you want to stay off your feet as much as possible. And while you shouldn’t put much weight on your heel while it’s recovering, you do want to stimulate production of collagen that repairs the tendon — which requires some weight.
I: Ice packs will help dull the pain and reduce inflammation.
C: Compress the ankle with an elastic bandage (but not too tight)
E: Elevate the leg to reduce swelling.
This should help you recover from most Achilles tendonitis injuries. However, more severe cases may not be so easily healed and should be seen by your doctor or other physician that is famiiliar with your medical history.
Achilles tendonitis is just one possible injury out of a dozen injuries you could possibily encounter on your road to a healthy body and a healthly lifestyle. However, with a good diet, proper exercise techniques, and adequate warmups, you can most likely deter and avoid most injuries.
